Salluit
Did you know that Salluit…
Means “the thin ones” in Inuktitut and refers to a period of time when people in the area were facing starvation
Is situated between rugged mountains at the far end of Sugluk Inlet, 10km in from the Hudson Strait
Was one of the areas occupied by the early Dorset people as early as 800 BC as is evidenced by archeological finds in the region
Is built largely on permafrost and has suffered at least two significant landslides in the past 10 years, which caused considerable damage to homes and infrastructure
Didn’t become a legal municipality until 1979 although the first house was built there in 1959
